Main Findings

This flash model is supplementary to our interactive comment (Makarieva A.M., Gorshkov V.G. 2009 HESSD 6: S311-S317). Press the arrow to see the next scene. Initially pressures in the two containers are equal (bulk equilibrium). The light gas (red) and the heavy gas (CO2) start to diffuse via the porous wall with different diffusion coefficients depending on their molecular mass (the lighter gas diffuses more rapidly). Therefore, some pressure difference arises across the wall. This pressure difference is ultimately relaxed (not shown), when the diffusion process is completed. In the second scene, vertical bars indicate pressure within the containers, horizontal bars indicate concentrations of both gases in the two containers. The model created by Dr. Sergey Buruchenko. Added March 13, 2009.
